Do I have to be a patient at Tandartspraktijk Jan van Galen to receive urgent treatment?

My cheek has swollen after dental treatment. What should I do?

After having a tooth extracted, swelling of the jaw or cheek is normal. This relates to the way your body’s defence mechanism reacts. The swelling will decrease after a few days without treatment. If the swelling has not decreased after three days and you have a fever, we advise you to make an emergency appointment immediately at our practice in Amsterdam.

What should I do if my tooth has been knocked out or has broken off?

  1. Grasp your tooth by the crown (the visible part) and avoid touching the root.
  2. Rinse the tooth for about 10 seconds in cold running water. If you do not have any water at hand, then lick the tooth to clean it as well as possible.
  3. Put the tooth back in place. It does not matter if it does not fit properly.
  4. Bite firmly on a gauze or some cotton wool. This is to keep the tooth in place. Then make an appointment at our practice immediately.

My tooth is loose. What should I do?

Leave your tooth in place, do not touch it and, above all, do not push it back. Make an appointment at our practice immediately for first-rate treatment.

When can you provide treatment for my urgent complaints?

It is not easy to define when your complaint is really an emergency. This is why we always advise you to discuss your complaint with our assistant over the phone. To give you an idea of what is considered an emergency, we have provided a few examples below.

Emergency

  • Acute inflammation accompanied by fever
  • Bleeding after a tooth extraction
  • Severe toothache with a swollen cheek
  • Teeth which have become loose or have been knocked out due to an accident, fall or blow

Not an emergency

  • Toothache due to a cavity
  • Sensitive or swollen gums
  • Afterpain following dental treatment
  • Temporomandibular joint pain
  • A loose crown or bridge
  • Fillings which have fallen out
